White Cross

Message from your lovely executive here.

After our meeting this week we decided that everybody is all couped up revising hard, practising for roses, finishing of essays, starting exams that your time pressures are going to be great. So, this week decided to knock a social on the head.

But do not fear we have something planned for next week, the pub quiz on TUESDAY at the White Cross. It will be an evening social, full of light relaxation and some questions. Hopefully if we put all our collective knowledge together accumulated through revision we will have a good chance of wining! Failing that can always win one of the bonus prizes, which we won this week for our team name “Nick’s mum’s like Noddy- she charges six pence a time.”

Details are as follows: You Townies meet at White Cross, at 2000 and those Campus people meet 1940 in Furness Foyer!

VIEW FROM THE TOP

This week has reminded us all that although politicians are often accused of living in a bubble away from the real world, they like all of us are human and experience life’s highs and lows like the rest of us. I am of course referring to the tragic death of Ivan Cameron. Here I am going to do something unusual, praise Gordon Brown for the dignified manner in which he handled himself and the words he delivered in the house on Wednesday.

The last seven days has also seen the political heavyweight that is Harriet Harman!! Vow that the ex-Royal Bank of Scotland chief executive, Sir Fred Goodwin would not end up with the pension pot (£16m) even if his retirement deal proved legally watertight. As you will all know Sir Fred has been blamed for leading RBS to near collapse and a tax payer bail out. The government are even going as far as considering a special act of parliament to ensure he does not receive his bounty. From my perspective Sir Fred is not retired and therefore the money is nothing but a severance payment and in effect he is being rewarded for failure. If Sir Fred was to live for another 40 years (very possible) then his £700,000 per annum will would drain about £28m from RBS’s already depleted vaults

However I cannot help feel that the real fault lies elsewhere if the inappropriately named Goodwin did not exist, the Government's Department of Propaganda would need to invent him. By casting Sir Fred as the pantomime villain – the credit crunch's Dick Dastardly – the unholy trinity of Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling and Lord Mandelson has been able to deflect attention from Labour's calamitous stewardship. If the government propaganda machine had its way sir Fred would become the modern day William Wallace– emasculated, eviscerated, with his head placed on a pike atop London Bridge.
