Welcome Back!
by Alex on 13 Jan 2008
Welcome back to Lancaster! I hope you had a great Christmas and New year. This term for Lancaster Conservative Future will be busy with lots of different events, and the start of our campaign for 2008, more details about that will be coming soon. However in week 1 we are having a low key meeting in Pendle bar starting at 7pm on Tuesday, this will give us a chance to have a good catch, without spending our student loan, (well too much of it anyway).
If you are coming to the Lord Trimble Meal on the 31st January, please can you bring your cheque along to the meeting in Pendle bar so I can forward them on this week. For members that have not put their name forward for this dinner, but would like to attend, then please contact me as I have one spare ticket . This ticket will be given to the first person to get back to me.
Lancaster Students Let Down by Labour
by Alex on 06 Jan 2008
As part of Lancaster Conservative Future’s on-going campaign against political apathy, the society recently attempted to organise a cross-party debate in order to introduce students to the candidates fighting for the Constituency of Lancaster and Fleetwood at the next general election. Unfortunately, Lancaster University Labour Club condemned the event as an unproductive use of time and energy and their Prospective Parliamentary Candidate, Clive Grunshaw, has declined the invitation to take part at the present time.
Lancaster Conservative Future's Chairman, David Bonner, said “I think it is a real shame that Labour have refused to take part in this event. The intention was to create an informative and meaningful debate in order to encourage students to engage with local politics and to raise awareness of the key issues the candidates will aim to tackle in the run up to the general election. Labour has denied students the chance to engage with the candidates in this way at this stage and I think it is a real shame that they view events such as this as unproductive.”
Labour said they would take part in a candidates’ panel event only when the general election is imminent. David said “with political apathy so rife amongst younger people we should be trying to engage students with local candidates consistently and not just when votes are to be won. The attitude Labour have taken over this event is precisely what makes people so cynical about politics in the first place”. Lancaster Conservative Future is considering the possibility of running the event as planned, despite Labour’s absence.
Two New Ways to Keep Up to Date
by David on 04 Jan 2008
The Lancaster CF team has recently launched two new ways for members to keep up to date with the latest Lancaster CF news and events. Members can add a RSS feed to their RSS reader to have new stories delivered directly to their web browser or email software and can now add a Lancaster CF Facebook application to their profile, which will bring real time updates from the news section of the Lancaster CF website directly to users' Facebook accounts.
Vice-Chair (Communications) Alex Law said: "these initiatives have been undertaken to make it easier for members to stay informed about Lancaster CF news and events, and also as a means of raising the society's profile amongst the wider population”.
You can add the application by following this link and logging into your Facebook account when prompted: Lancaster Conservative Future News Updates . If you have trouble using this link copy and paste apps.facebook.com/lancastercf in to your web browser. The RSS feed is available by subscribing to the Lancaster CF feed via the orange button located on the Lancaster CF homepage.
